Laptops, of course, are great on-
the-go. From listening to music in
hotel rooms to watching movies
or playing games on airplanes,
laptops can satisfy a wide
variety of entertainment needs
on the road.
Selecting a laptop that will
primarily be used for entertainment
on-the-go requires some additional
tradeoffs. First you need to decide
how big a thing you are willing to
lug around. This will ultimately
determine screen size, but this does
not have to be as tough as it seems.
A DVD or Blu-Ray disc rendered full
screen on even a moderate size
laptop display can be very engaging
and satisfying. Remember that you
are only about 12 to 18 inches from
the screen.
This sense of immersion can be
further enhanced through the
use of advanced audio processing
systems like SRS Premium Sound™
which can really bring you into the
cinema by rendering high quality
surround sound over standard
headphones or notebook speakers.
Similar techniques, as mentioned
later in the section on sound, can
create surround sound over your
laptop speakers, while significantly
improving their audio performance.
When selecting a media drive,
go for Blu-Ray when your budget
permits.
  Over time, this will
give you much more value and
flexibility. These notebook drives
can also burn CD's and DVD's and
read all commonly available optical
disc formats.
TAKING IT ALL
WITH YOU
A movie is long, two are longer. If
you really want to see how the whole
thing comes out, you will need a
notebook that doesn't die before the
villain does. Consider an extended
battery, or better yet, an additional
battery to ensure completion of the
mission. The good news is that most
airplanes, and even trains, have some
form of power outlet that can be
used to keep the computer running
indefinitely. On the plane, you will
generally need a commonly available
power inverter that converts the
12VDC available to standard 115VAC
line voltage.
You can then plug your laptop
power supply into the convertor the
way you do into the wall. Just make
sure you get one that can provide
enough power for your laptop.
Other considerations regarding
CPU and memory size are similar
to tho se discussed later in this
guide, but with a laptop, power
must always be kept in mind.
So it might be necessary to
compromise a bit on both.
Anyway you configure them
though, today's laptop computers
prove that you can take it with you.
Another consideration
when selecting a laptop
is battery life.
